Can You Paint Your Fence When It Rains?
It’s been a long hot and rainy summer in New Orleans. The intense sun and the humidity may have impacted the looks for your fence. Since it seems like the wet weather is not going to end any time soon, you may ask yourself: Can you paint your fence when it rains?
How Long You Should Wait
The type of paint you are using and the type of fence you have will determine how long you should wait after a downpour, before starting the painting process. After a heavy rain, you will have to wait a day or two for your wooden fence to dry out. Iron fences will dry faster. If you are using an oil based stain, then you will have to wait for the fence to be dry to the touch. But, if you are using a water based stain, then it can be a little damp. If you are using latex, experts recommend you should get it on for 4 to 6 hours before a light rain. By then, the paint will have dried enough to survive without spotting. Oil based paints need 12 to 24 hours to set up depending on the temperature. Curing time is a longer, but the drying is much faster for latex than oil. Most paints will have instructions including the times on how long they’ll take to cure. If you paint or stain your fence while it is we,t the paint my not stick to your fence and you may even see some bubbles once you are finished. Make sure your fence is clean before staining or painting it.
